Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed the results of a Tzanck test involving a tissue scraping of an active skin ulcer from a penile lesion, in what was diagnosed as a case of herpes progenitalis. In this particular view, note the presence of a multinucleated giant cell, also known as a Tzanck cell, in the center of this image. The discovery of Tzanck cells alone, will not be a conclusive finding in a diagnosis of herpes simplex, for these cells are also found in scraping from ulcers involved in varicella zoster virus (VZV) lesions, as well as the autoimmune disease, pemphigus vulgaris, and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) lesions.
