Caption:
Captured during an autopsy, this image reveals a blockage of the right pulmonary artery in a case of bacterial endocarditis, an infection involving either the innermost lining of the heart, or the heart’s interior valves. Usually, it includes a weakened heart with the introduction of bloodborne bacterial pathogens, known as bacteremia. Many times, the bacteria that cause the damage to the heart’s interior, originate on the body itself, being introduced to the blood by way of invasive operative procedures including, but not limited to dental or surgical procedures, penetrating wounds, or by way of injectable drugs.
