This teenage female patient presented to a clinical setting with a severe case of acne vulgaris. You will note the coalescence of the cysts, or nodules, indicating that in this case, the inflammatory reaction was affecting more than merely the skin’s superficial layers. Acne manifests when there is a blockage of the hair follicles by a plug, composed of a combination of sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria, which causes ensuing inflammation, and rupture of the sebaceous, or oil gland surrounding the root of each hair shaft, thereby, spilling its contents into the surrounding tissues.
