Caption:
Using ultraviolet (UV) illumination, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of numerous, Treponema pallidum spirochetes. By using the indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) staining method, the specimen had been treated with fluorescent treponemal antibody (FTA) antigen, which made these bacteria glow under UV illumination. This specimen was extracted from a purified, Treponema suspension from the Oak Ridge fraction 12.
