Caption:
This image was captured during the necropsy of a rock squirrel, Spermophilus variegatus, formerly known as Citellus variegatus, which was afflicted with the plague. See PHIL 14296, for another view of this plague-infected rock squirrel, just before this dissection had been started. Note the hemorrhagic region seen here, within the lower right abdominal cavity (arrows), which corresponds to the hemorrhage seen in the exterior view of this animal in 14296, as well as the petechial hemorrhages on the interior layers of the retracted abdominal wall.
