Caption:
Under a magnification of 1000X, this photomicrograph revealed the following findings in this sample of a transtracheal aspirate. The report read that there were Gram-negative rods, and Gram-negative cocci, which were determined to be Haemophilus influenzae, and non-meningococcal Neisseria sp. organisms respectively. See PHIL 18442, for another view of this specimen. Note that the diplococcal, Gram-negative, Neisseria sp. bacteria, were occupying the intracellular environment of this solitary white blood cell (WBC), while the rod-shaped H. influenzae bacteria are within the extracellular matrix.
