Caption:
This photomicrograph revealed the presence of an egg of the trematode, Schistosoma mansoni. The characteristic lateral spine was not visible in this image. The ovum’s miracidium, or internally developing larva, was well visualized. S. mansoni eggs are large, ranging from 114µm-180µm long X 45µm-70µm wide, and have a characteristic shape, with a prominent lateral spine near the posterior end. The anterior end is tapered and slightly curved. By the time the eggs are excreted in stool, they contain a mature miracidium.
