Caption:
This patient presented with a penile chancre during the primary stage of his syphilitic condition. Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by the Treponema pallidum spirochete. Chancres that form during primary syphilis, are usually firm, round, small, and painless, and develop at the spot where the T. pallidum bacteria enter the body. The chancre lasts 3 to 6-weeks, and it heals without treatment. However, if adequate treatment is not administered, the infection progresses to the secondary stage.
