Caption:
Under a magnification of 450X, this photomicrograph of a hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained specimen, reveals some of the histopathology found in a tissue sample taken from the edge of a chronic inflammatory granule, in a case of actinomycosis, or mycetoma, caused by a Gram-positive, fungus-like aerobic bacteria, Propionibacterium propionicus, formerly known as Arachnia propionica. Actinomycosis, or mycetoma, is a slowly progressive, destructive infection of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues, fascia, and can progress to a point where it can affect bone as well.
