Caption:
This historic 1954 image depicted the landscape at Angostura, Puerto Rico, highlighting a primary irrigation canal and its siphon portal. Canals like this one, are known to harbor the parasitic organism responsible for causing the disease schistosomiasis, as well as the organism’s intermediate hosts, the Biomphalaria spp. snails. Free swimming Schistosoma larvae penetrate the foot of these snails, infecting the animals, within which the larvae develop, maturing into miracidia, exiting the body of the host snail, and becoming free swimming, able to then infect unwary humans swimming in their environment by penetrating the human being’s skin.
