Caption:
This photomicrograph reveals some of the ultrastructural morphology exhibited by an egg of the cestode, Diphyllobothrium latum, a parasitic tapeworm. This particular view is a close-up of the anterior pole, operculated of the egg depicted in PHIL 5258. Diphyllobothrium sp. unembryonated eggs are passed in the stool, and are oval or ellipsoidal, with an operculum at one end that can be inconspicuous, as in this case. At the opposite, or abopercular end, there is a small knob that can be barely discernible.
