This is the second in a series of images, PHIL 16989 through 17013, depicting a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Library and Information Center (PHLIC) exhibit entitled, Bringing the World Home: CDC’s Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCVs) Celebrate Peace Corps Week 02/23/14 – 03/01/14. This statuette was provided by RPCV, Rachel Johnson, whose stint in South Africa spanned 2006 through 2008. The figurine is used in the courtship rituals performed by members of the Southern African tribe known as the Ndebele, and consists of a suitor placing the figurine on his intended mate's doorstep, as a proposal of marriage. The Southern Ndebele tribe, also referred to as the Southern Transvaal Ndebele, is among the smallest tribes in Southern Africa.
