Caption:
This photograph depicts a close view of a patient’s dentition, revealing a condition known as gingival hypertrophy, or a swelling of the gums, which had been caused by the patient’s intake of the anticonvulsant/anti-seizure medication, Dilantin, also known generically as phenytoin. Phenytoin drug-induced gingival hypertrophy is thought to be caused by the drug preventing dietary folate to be made available to the body, and folic acid supplementation has been shown to prevent this overgrowth of the gums by counteracting this folate deficiency.
