Caption:
This image depicts a left lateral view of a patient’s face. This person presented to a clinical setting with symptoms suggestive of a possible case of intracranial pathology, which included possible meningitis. Coincidentally, the accompanying cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, which can be seen here, as a small drop of clear, colorless CSF at the tip of the nose, allowed the clinician to test the fluid for the presence of pathogens. The tests came back positive, leading to a diagnosis of pneumococcal meningitis, caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae.
