Entitled, “Measuring Trachoma in Burkina Faso”, this image was created by CDC ORISE Fellow, Alaine Kathryn Knipes. Trachoma affects approximately 84 million people worldwide, and can lead to blindness if left untreated. However, mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin, can control trachoma. CDC partnered with leading organizations to create a simpler, more cost-effective means of assessing MDA impact on trachoma. In this image, a diagnostic technician was performing an eye exam in a training exercise outside of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. This photo earned Alaine one of her three First Place awards in the 2014 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International People”.
