Entitled, “Iron Lung”, this image was captured by CDC Environmental Health Scientist, in the Division of Toxicology and Environmental Medicine, of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Oscar Tarragó, MD, MPH, who explains, “When my daughter and I visited the David J. Sencer CDC Museum, she was impressed by the iron lung displayed. I explained the story of polio to her, and why these children were confined to iron lungs. This helped her to understand the importance of vaccines, and why she received the polio vaccine as a child.” The picture earned Dr. Tarragó a tie for the Second Place award in the 2010 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “Domestic People and Programs”.
