Entitled, “Evaluating Health Hazards Following an Oil Spill”, this image was created by CDC Health Scientist, Aaron Sussell, PhD, MPH., CIH. During the 2010 Deepwater Horizon response, NIOSH and its partners conducted health hazard evaluations in order to assess potential worker exposures and health effects. Workers face many occupational hazards, including long shift work, sun exposure, heat stress, and working in awkward positions. In this photo, oil spill response team members were manually removing tar balls from the beach sand at Destin, Florida, during their 12-hour night shift. The image earned Aaron a tie for the First Place award in the 2011 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “Domestic People and Programs”.
