Captured in the town of Dadaab, Kenya in December 2013, this image showed a nomadic family’s donkey, which was being used as a makeshift baby carrier. In this case, there were two infants atop the donkey, securely contained inside the load. You can see one of the babies here, whose head had popped outside the confines of his carrier, allowing him to observe the goings-on outside. Kenyan Field Epidemiology Training Program (KFETP) residents met these two nomadic families as they were migrating to greener pastures, while they were conducting an in-process evaluation of the inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), and oral polio vaccine (OPV) supplementary immunization activities in the Dadaab Division. One family agreed to have their child vaccinated, but the other refused, whisking their child away in its carrier.
