This 2011 image, depicted Iraqi Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) first cohort resident, Dr. Abbas Mahdi Abbas, as he was conducting an interview with a group of boys about an outbreak of viral hepatitis. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise, so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
