Photographed inside Muntilan Hospital, in the Magelang District of Indonesia, on April 2012, this image depicted Indonesian Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) resident, Lalu Hendi Hutomo, in the process of interviewing a stroke patient who was lying in her bed, while a family member was standing on the far right. The interview findings, would then be used, in order to determine the association between a high-fiber diet, and a reduction in stroke prevalence. As it turned out, it was found that there was a direct positive correlation between one’s intake of dietary fiber, and the possibility of avoiding a debilitating stroke. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
