Viewed from the front, this image depicted the face of a Nigerian child, which exhibited a malformation known as a congenital hemangioma. In this case, the tumorous outgrowth of abnormal blood vessels on the right side of the face, had caused a marked deformation of the ipsilateral eye, nose, and lips.
