ID#: 20305
Caption:
This image depicted a young Nigerian girl, photographed from the front (Lt), and the left side, who was showing signs of a swollen liver, known as hepatomegaly, which had been brought on due to her state of malnutrition. See PHIL 20306, for another view of this patient, taken at another time, showing even greater abdominal distention. In this case, hepatomegaly was due to the deposition of triglyceride fats, and is commonly found in cases of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM), also referred to as kwashiorkor.
