Caption:
Captured after beginning a sulfa drug therapy, this image depicted a left lateral view of the head and neck of a male patient, who presented with a fungal infection of the neck that had produced open, cutaneous lesions in the inframandibular region, as highlighted prior to treatment, in PHIL 20423, and the face, as seen in 20424. Note the resolution of the cervical lesion, after having undergone granulation and epithelialization, as it healed. The infection, known as paracoccidioidomycosis, which is also known as Lutz-Splendore-Almeida disease, or Brazilian blastomycosis, was caused by the fungal organism, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
