Standing in front of the Radisson Mammy Yoko hotel, located in Freetown, Sierra Leone, this photograph was captured during the country’s Ebola outbreak in 2015. These public health experts had traveled from China, as representatives from China’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC). As part of this group Dr. Shuyu Wu (3rd from the left), and Dr. Yuzhi Zhang (4th from the left), were amongst the participants. Their task was to bring the CDC diagnostic test for Ebola, to the new Biological Safety Laboratory at the Jui Hospital in Sierra Leone. The Jui laboratory was built by the Chinese government, and staffed with Chinese speaking scientists from the China CDC, which performs many of the same functions as the US CDC. As Chinese nationals, Dr. ShuYu and Dr. Yuzhi, were able to cross language and travel barriers, to quickly get needed supplies and training to the Chinese laboratory.
