This image depicted a left lateral view of a young child’s left leg, who was undergoing an examination, after having been brought into a clinical setting, due to symptoms caused by severe malnutrition, and the ensuing onset of the disease known as Kwashiorkor. Note the characteristic pathologic changes involving the skin of her left lower extremity, including the sloughing and cracking of the skin, revealing a pink-colored, underlying cutaneous layer, irregular pigmentation, and underlying erythema.
