Caption:
Under a low magnification of 37X, this hematoxylin-eosin (H&E)-stained brain tissue specimen, harvested from a deceased Rhesus monkey, Macaca mulatta, revealed histopathologic changes indicative of an infection known as fibrinosuppurative pneumococcal meningitis, which had been caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus pneumoniae. Important here, was the presence of diffuse fibrinosuppurative leptomeningeal exudate, which was accompanied by severe vascular congestion within the leptomeninges, and the cortical brain matter.
