Caption:
This image depicted a close-up view of the skin surface of a patient, who had presented with this maculopapular rash, that was determined to be a case of chickenpox, caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), also known as Human herpesvirus 3 (HHV-3). In this view, you were able to see that within this crop of vesicles, some were at different stages of evolution. You could see that the majority were in what is known as the eruptive stage, consisting of fluid-filled blisters. One of the lesions, located in the upper central region of the image, was in its crusting stage, whereupon, a crusty scab had formed over its surface, after it had ruptured.
