Captured in 1965, this image depicted the interior of a laboratory within the Technology Branch of the Biochemistry Section, in what was the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Planetary Quarantine Program, formerly the Interplanetary Vehicle Sterilization Project laboratories. This lab was located inside the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS), Center for Disease Control (CDC), Phoenix Laboratories, in Phoenix, Arizona. In this view, a Laminar Flow Hood is highlighted. The flow hood blew a current of sterile, filtered air towards the technician, who would have been seated in front of the hood. At this Phoenix location, it was CDC’s job to develop sampling and culturing procedures, involved in the control of possible contamination of extraterrestrial organisms encountered during interplanetary, or lunar expeditions.
