This image depicted a left lateral view of a spotted scorpionfish, Scorpaena plumieri, which measured 130mm in length. The specimen was collected at Station 222, St. John, Virgin Islands, by Dr. John E. Randall, who donated this photograph. Note the pointed spines of this fish’s dorsal fin, which are able to transmit a toxin when they penetrate the flesh of a predator, or a curious human being.
