Under 7.4X magnification, this image depicts a left lateral view of the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, a member of the darkling beetle family (Tenebrionidae), characterized by hardened forewings (elytra). The red flour beetle is a common agricultural pest, infesting stored products such as flour, cereals, and pasta. Although not a human pathogen, it may occasionally be associated with allergic reactions. See PHIL 16348 for a dorsal view of another T. castaneum specimen.
