This image shows an anterior view of a gross pathology specimen of the lungs, larynx, trachea, and bronchial tree from a patient who died of diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Purulent exudate is present within the larynx and bilateral bronchial trees, with findings consistent with laryngitis and bronchopneumonia. The photograph was produced by the former Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP).
