Caption:
This photograph depicts a close view of the bright red berries and simple, alternate leaves of the European bittersweet plant, Solanum dulcamara. All parts of the plant are toxic, containing the glycoalkaloid solanine, which functions as a natural insecticidal compound. Symptoms of solanine poisoning may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cardiac arrhythmias. Dermatologic reactions such as pruritus and eczema have also been reported, along with thyroid dysfunction and generalized arthralgia. Severe toxicity can result in neurologic complications, including paralysis and, in rare cases, death.
