This photograph depicts a close view of green false hellebore, Veratrum viride, highlighting its broad, pleated leaves. All parts of this perennial plant are highly toxic, containing steroidal alkaloids such as protoveratrine and related compounds. Ingestion may result in severe vomiting, hypotension, bradycardia, seizures, and respiratory depression. Without prompt medical treatment, severe poisoning can progress to cardiovascular collapse due to the plant’s effects on voltage-gated sodium channels and autonomic regulation.
