Caption:
Captured in their natural woodland habitat, this photograph depicts a close view of fly agaric mushrooms, Amanita muscaria, highlighting their red caps adorned with characteristic white spots. The flesh of this mushroom contains the psychoactive compound muscimol, as well as ibotenic acid, a neurotoxic precursor that is partially converted to muscimol upon drying or ingestion. Consumption can result in nausea, vomiting, somnolence, and dizziness, followed by confusion, dysphoria, hallucinations, retrograde amnesia, and, in severe cases, seizures.
