Entitled Epidemiology of Leishmaniasis, this illustration depicts transmission of Leishmania spp. parasites by sand flies of the genus Phlebotomus during blood meals. The diagram illustrates both anthroponotic transmission, in which humans serve as the primary reservoir and source of infection for other humans via the sand fly vector, and zoonotic transmission, in which animals such as dogs, cats, and other mammals participate as reservoir hosts before subsequent transmission to humans. Leishmania donovani is classically associated with anthroponotic transmission, as humans are its principal reservoir. However, detection of L. donovani or antibodies to its antigens in certain animal hosts suggests that zoonotic transmission may also occur under specific ecological conditions.
