Entitled Epidemiology of Murine Typhus, this illustration depicts the epidemiologic cycle of the bacterium Rickettsia typhi. In this cycle, the roof rat, Rattus rattus, serves as the primary reservoir host, and the Oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis, functions as the vector. Fleas acquire R. typhi while feeding on infected rats and subsequently transmit the bacterium during later blood meals. Humans may become infected when bitten by an infective flea, making murine typhus, also known as endemic typhus, a zoonotic infection transmitted from animals to humans.
