This historic July 1966 image was captured in Hyde Park, New Mexico, near Santa Fe, and depicts activities at an outdoor laboratory site established for a plague research study. A public health field technician is shown removing residual tissue from long bones collected for diagnostic analysis. The bones were subsequently processed using a saline wash to extract bone marrow for testing for the presence of fraction 1 (F1) plague antigen.
