This photograph depicts a physician supporting a 2?-year-old girl with a history of 20 episodes of recurrent aseptic meningitis. The condition, known as Mollaret’s meningitis and also referred to as benign recurrent lymphocytic meningitis, had no identifiable causative organism at the time. The patient was also diagnosed with hereditary spherocytosis (HS), a hereditary hemolytic anemia characterized by spheroidal red blood cells that are prematurely destroyed in the spleen, resulting in anemia.
