This photograph depicts a 12-day-old infant being cradled by a physician. The infant was born with a congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection and exhibited an erythematous rash composed of vesicular skin lesions. The patient subsequently developed herpetic keratitis of the right eye (PHIL 23673), which was treated with idoxuridine (IDU). Despite therapy, the keratitic lesion progressed to a dendritic corneal ulcer. The left eye was not affected.
