This photograph depicts a close view of a 12-day-old infant’s face with the right eyelids retracted to reveal ocular involvement. The infant was born with a congenital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, exhibiting an erythematous rash composed of vesicular skin lesions (PHIL 23672). The patient developed herpetic keratitis of the right eye, shown here, which was treated with idoxuridine (IDU). Despite therapy, the keratitic lesion progressed to a dendritic corneal ulcer. The left eye was not affected.
