Caption:
This photograph depicts a close posterior view of the lumbar spine region of a 6-month-old child, highlighting a pigmented neuropore. Six weeks prior to this image, the infant developed meningitis. A patent caudal neuropore at birth indicates incomplete closure of the distal neural tube during fetal development. In this case, a fistulous tract formed as a result of this defect, creating a communication between the skin surface and the spinal canal, which permitted entry of bacterial pathogens into the central nervous system and resulted in meningitis. The child was also born with isolated levocardia, characterized by a left-sided cardiac apex with abdominal situs inversus, and congenital heart disease of an unspecified type.
