This image shows a frontal view of a bromothymol blue (BTB) agar culture plate inoculated with Neisseria meningitidis group B, types 1 and 2, from a California culture mixture. Incubation produced numerous small yellow and light green colonies. Oxidative metabolism of carbohydrate in the medium lowered the pH, causing the BTB indicator to turn yellow. Colonies retaining a neutral pH appear green. See PHIL 23726 for a closer view of these N. meningitidis colonies.
