Caption:
This image shows a close right lateral view of the right ear of a 7½-year-old boy with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS), an X-linked recessive immunodeficiency disorder. Clinical manifestations in this patient included thrombocytopenia, recurrent infections, chronic draining otitis media, and, as shown here, chronic otitis externa. Additional findings included pneumonia, dysgammaglobulinemia, and chronic eczematous eruptions visible behind the ear and along the neck. Due to its X-linked recessive inheritance, WAS predominantly affects males; this patient’s younger brother was also affected. See PHIL 23736 for a full anterior view demonstrating additional eczematous lesions involving the face, neck, and lower extremities.
