Caption:
This image shows a close anterior view of the lower face and neck of a 7½-year-old boy with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS), an X-linked recessive immunodeficiency disorder. Clinical manifestations in this patient included thrombocytopenia, recurrent infections with chronic draining otitis media and chronic otitis externa (see PHIL 23735), pneumonia, dysgammaglobulinemia, and chronic eczematous eruptions, as shown here involving the face and neck. Due to its X-linked recessive inheritance, WAS predominantly affects males; this patient’s younger brother was also affected. See PHIL 23736 for a full anterior view demonstrating additional eczematous lesions elsewhere on the body.
