Caption:
Under 970X magnification, this photomicrograph of a slide culture shows the morphologic features of the fungal organism Exophiala jeanselmei (formerly known as Phialophora jeanselmei). Characteristic hyphal swellings, conidiogenous cells (annelides) giving rise to clusters of ellipsoidal conidia, and vacuolation of some hyphal filaments are visible. This specimen was isolated from a case of mycetoma and donated in 1955 by Dr. N.E. Levan. See PHIL 23774 and PHIL 23775 for two additional views of this organism from other regions of the culture.
