Caption:
This image depicts an anterior view of three Petri dish culture plates, each containing casein medium. The plate on the left was inoculated with the bacterium Nocardia asteroides, the middle plate with N. brasiliensis, and the plate on the right with a Streptomyces sp. organism. This assay demonstrates casein hydrolysis. Note that N. asteroides does not hydrolyze casein, as indicated by the absence of a clear zone, whereas both N. brasiliensis and Streptomyces sp. produce clear zones surrounding their colonies, indicating casein hydrolysis.
