This illustration highlights a morphologic comparison between two roundworm ova: the pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis (left), and the whipworm, Trichuris trichiura (right). Eggs of E. vermicularis measure approximately 50–60 µm by 20–30 µm, are transparent, elongate to oval in shape, and are slightly flattened on one side. They are typically partially embryonated when shed. T. trichiura eggs measure approximately 50–55 µm by 20–25 µm, are barrel-shaped, thick-shelled, and possess a pair of polar plugs at each end. These eggs are unembryonated when passed in stool.
