This illustration highlights variations in hyphal branching patterns exhibited by fungal species of the genus Penicillium. On the left is a typical monoverticillate penicillus, consisting of a single conidiophore topped by a terminal whorl of phialides. On the right is a typical asymmetric, complex penicillus, characterized by irregular subterminal branching of the conidiophore, terminating in multiple metulae, each bearing phialides. In both forms, the phialides produce the asexual spores known as conidia.
