This image depicts an anterior view of a female infant in a clinical setting, supported in a seated position. The abdomen is markedly distended due to hepatosplenomegaly. The infant was affected by Niemann–Pick disease, an inherited disorder of lipid metabolism characterized by the accumulation of lipids within cells of the reticuloendothelial system, particularly in the liver and spleen. This condition was historically referred to as lipid histiocytosis. The infant died at 4 months of age. See PHIL 24311 for a right lateral view of this patient.
