This image shows a left lateral view of the thigh of a young child, highlighting a hemorrhagic rash on the anterolateral aspect. This blotchy, bruise-like eruption was caused by staphylococcal septicemia, which developed following placement of a shunt for management of hydrocephalus, with subsequent contamination of the shunt site by pathogenic Staphylococcus species.
